Community-led climate change adaptation is an approach that puts local communities at the center of planning, decision-making, and implementation to reduce vulnerability to climate impacts. Instead of external actors dictating solutions, it emphasizes locally relevant knowledge, priorities, and capacities. Key elements include: • Local ownership and empowerment: communities identify risks, set priorities, and drive actions. • Participatory processes: inclusive engagement with diverse groups (women, youth, elders, marginalized communities) to co-create solutions. • Local knowledge and science: integrating indigenous knowledge, community observations, and available data with technical expertise. • Context-specific solutions: actions tailored to local hazards (flooding, drought, heat, storms), resources, and cultural practices. • Sustainable and scalable outcomes: leveraging existing community networks, institutions, and resources for long-term resilience. • Accountability and transparency: clear roles, shared ownership, and measurable progress. Core benefits • Relevance: actions directly address the most pressing local risks. • Robustness: blending traditional knowledge with scientific methods creates more adaptable strategies. • Ownership and uptake: communities are more likely to maintain and sustain measures. • Equity: involving marginalized groups improves who benefits from adaptation
